Who is ‘Learn to Lead’ for?
This course is for people who are already competent seconds and want to get onto the sharp end. You will already have a good idea of how to place gear, but need some guidance on judging it’s quality. You will gain most from this course by having 2 or more days instruction.
What will be covered?
The Learn to Lead course is run at a maximum ratio of 1 instructor : 2 participants. 2 participants are required so that you can take it in turns to belay each other - lead belaying is an important as the leading itself! Your instructor will be climbing or on a fixed line alongside you advising you on your gear placements, the next move and techniques to help you successfully lead pitches. What we can cover:
Belay construction
Belaying a leader and second safely
Placing protection - nuts, hexes & cams
Climbing movement technique
Abseiling safely
Getting information from the guidebooks
Choosing the right route
Protecting traverses
What previous clients thought ...
“Lou is technically excellent and really takes the time to understand her client and explain background to why things are done in a certain way, which is great.”
Vanessa & Steve Barrett - London
“I just wanted to say thanks for your attention during those 2 days, I have to say it has helped me a lot with my confidence and ability to lead (although, I didn't have much chance to use it since). I think I have discovered many different little bits which were missing in my climbing/leading ability.”
Peter Ziak- Bath
Other Questions
What if the weather is bad?
We will endeavour to spend as much time as possible out on the crags, however if the weather is bad we can often cover many of the skills in the climbing wall.
